Man pleads guilty to aggravated assault

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Waynesboro, Pa., man on Friday pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in Franklin County Court, according to court records.

Derek Shoemaker, 21, of 32 Cleveland Ave., faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on Aug. 13. In exchange for the plea agreement, charges of terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and simple assault will be dismissed, according to court records.

Shoemaker was in court Friday for the beginning of the July trial term. He entered the plea before Judge Richard J. Walsh.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police affidavit of probable cause, Shoemaker stabbed Aaron Myers of 1024 Warm Spring Road, Lot 55, several times in the back during an altercation in Myers' home on the morning of Feb. 2. Myers was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.

The affidavit stated that Shoemaker and his girlfriend had gone to Myers' mobile home on the afternoon of the previous day. At about 2 a.m., Shoemaker and the woman got into an argument and Myers began arguing with Shoemaker.

Police said the two men started "bumping chests and shoving each other." Shoemaker grabbed a knife in the kitchen and Myers retreated to a bedroom with his own girlfriend.

Shoemaker broke through the door, rushed Myers and stabbed him during the struggle, according to the affidavit.
