More than 300 cyclists to compete

More than 300 cyclists, some nationally known, are expected to compete in a two-day bike event in Washington County this weekend, organizers said.

The Hagerstown Trust/Clif Bar 2-Day Challenge is sponsored by the Antietam Velo Club, a Hagerstown-based cycling club.

The races are in Hagers-town's North End on Saturday and Hagerstown Community College on Sunday.

About 10 Antietam Velo Club members will race in the event, including event co-directors Tim Lung and Joseph Jefferson.

Lung said he and Jefferson usually race in the Baltimore and Washington areas but they also like to have a local event so they can showcase the sport for local residents.

"This will be a chance for Washington County to see some of the nation's best riders," Jefferson said.

There will be several races for cyclists of different ages and experience levels each day.

Racers reach an average speed of 25 mph and during final sprints can hit 40 mph, Lung said.

Lung said the club held races in Washington County for years until 1999. In 2000 and 2001 the club organized the state criterium championships in Frederick, Md., he said. A criterium is a short-course race, he said.

Saturday's events will include the Mid-Atlantic criterium championships for seniors and Sunday's events will include the Mid-Atlantic criterium championships for "masters," cyclists over 30 years age, Jefferson said. The seniors events are divided up by skill levels while the masters events are divided by age levels, Jefferson said.

While most of the spectators last year were friends and families of the racers, Jefferson said he is hoping there will be other spectators in this and future years. Because of the Saturday races, parking will be prohibited on the following streets: Charles Street, Hamilton Lane, Prospect Avenue and Oak Hill Avenue. Those streets will be closed to traffic from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information call 301-739-5653.
