MERCERSBURG, Pa. - A Greencastle, Pa., woman was killed in a one-car accident Monday afternoon on Pa. 416, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Cathy Daley, 51, of 15125 Maryland Line Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 6:10 p.m. by Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. The accident was reported to Franklin County Communications at 5:48 p.m.

Conner said Daley was in a Ford Escort that was traveling south about four-tenths of a mile south of Pa. 16 in Montgomery Township, Pa., when it ran off the road, struck a guardrail and went into a utility pole.

"It's still at the beginning stages of the investigation," said Sgt. John Romeo shortly before 11 p.m. "We don't know who was driving, or how many people were in the car."

Romeo said earlier in the evening that police were initially looking into the possibility that another person may have fled the scene.

"I won't comment on that until after the autopsy," Conner said when asked if Daley was the driver. He said he could not comment on whether she was wearing a seat belt.

Romeo said Daley was not ejected in the crash.

The autopsy was to be performed today or Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., Conner said.

Romeo said a state police accident reconstructionist was called in to assist with the investigation.
