Two officers hurt at MCI

June 28, 2003|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

Two correctional officers were injured June 21 in an altercation with a prisoner at Maryland Correctional Institution-Hagerstown, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman said.

At about 5 p.m., an inmate was being questioned in the dining hall about the possible theft of some food, said Capt. Priscilla Doggett. The inmate became combative and assaulted the officers, she said.

Both officers received cuts to the face, and one received a broken nose. They were treated at Washington County Hospital, Doggett said.

Doggett said the names of the officers and the inmate were being withheld because an investigation is ongoing.

Doggett said one officer has since returned to work and the other is still on leave.

Ray Lushbaugh, a correctional officers' union representative for Teamsters Local 103, was at the prison at the time but was not present for the fight. He said officers from other parts of the prison were dispatched to the scene and controlled it quickly.
