June 27, 2003|by GREGORY T. SIMMONS

A Hagerstown man has requested a jury trial on negligent vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with an accident on Mount Aetna Road that claimed two lives in October 2002.

Matthew David Meyer, 23, of 11010 Sani Lane, was charged in April in the deaths of Gerald Eugene Dietrich, 59, and Mary Ellen Dietrich, 61, who lived in the 2000 block of Academy Lane in Hagerstown.

Charging documents allege that Meyer was driving at a high rate of speed in the 20200 block of Mount Aetna Road on Oct. 23, 2002, when his vehicle struck the Dietrichs' pickup head on.

Meyer was injured in the wreck.

According to Washington County Circuit Court records, Meyer was released from home detention the day before the accident. He served six months on home detention after pleading guilty to a marijuana distribution charge dating from March 2001.
