Grier charges for berth in North-South match play field

PINEHURST, N.C. - Hagerstown's Ashley Grier survived the 36-hole stroke-play battle at the 101st North-South Women's Amateur on Tuesday with a 1-under par 72, giving her a two-day total of 150 and a spot in the 32-player match play field.

The Smithsburg graduate was involved in a five-player playoff and secured her match-play spot, lasting until the third playoff hole before dropping out.

Grier's opening match was an 8:42 a.m. tee time against second-seeded Kristen White of Doylestown, Pa. White posted a 68-66-134 to gain the second seed.

If Grier manages to beat White, she would return to afternoon action for another match play battle on the Pinehurst No. 2 course.

Sheaffer tops Juniors

Brandon Sheaffer posted a score of 2-over 56 to top a field of 37 participants in the year's first Yingling's Qualifier Tournament for the WACO Junior Golfer of Beaver Creek County Club.

The top 11 finishers will play in today's Beaver Creek Tourment.

Alicia Grier recorded three birdies en route to shooting 60 to finish second. Matt Wagner finished third with a 63.

Each of the golfers will be attending high school in the fall.


West End Little League

Moose 29, Stags 7: J.J. O'Neill had four hits - including a grand slam, home run and inside-the-park homer - and 10 RBI to lead Moose Josh Mentzer three hits, including hr, while Brett Smith added three hits and Kyle Head and Bradley Smith had two each in the win. Ryan Bean led the Stags with two hits.

Moose 11, AFL-CIO 4: J.J. O'Neill homered and Brett Smith had two hits for Moose. Seth Near had two hits for AFL-CIO.

West End Minor League

Hiser's Concrete 13, Western Enterprise 7: Paul Bigler, Aaron Rowland and Colby Johnson had three hits each for Hiser's. Amber Stevenson had three hits Western Enterprise.

Halfway Little League

Hoffman Auto 5, Valley Storage Bins 0: Andrew Duff pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Hoffman Auto.

South Mountain Minor League

Reese's Home Improvement 13, Terry's Auto Center 0: Dustin Harmon threw a no-hitter and added two hits for Reese's.

Hagerstown Pony League

Elks 16, Jeter Paving 14: Jason Southerland led Elks with two home runs while Chuck Dobson and Scott Myers each had two hits, including homers. Austin Barkdoll added two hits for Elks. For Jeter Paving, Ben Johnson had three hits with two home runs, Zeke Rickets had two hits including a home run and Sean Dickson had two hits.

Conococheague Junior League

Homewood 11, Moose 9: John Mason got the victory while Matt Coates had three hits to lead Homewood. Eric Imes added two hits and two RBI and Brendan Benisek had two hits for Homewood, who finished their season undefeated at 17-0. Travis Kelly had three hits and three RBI while Kory Harp added three hits for Moose.

American Little League

Goodwill 11, Elks 2: Mark Russ had three hits, including a home run, for Goodwill while Justin Clark and William Black each had two hits. Josh Favenbaker had two hits for Elks.

FOP 13, Thompson Concrete 3: Justin Myers and Jake Lichtenberg each had three hits for FOP. Gerald Tonsil, Andrew Likely, Jeremy Colter and Michaeld Hill each added two hits in the win. Ashlee Ernde had two hits for Thompson's.

Federal Little League

Kiwanis 21, Alsatia 1: Jeremy Wood led Kiwanis with three hits and six RBI while Will Murray had three hits and three RBI. Steven Coccodrilli had three hits and Ben Mellott and Tyquil Benson each had two hits in the win.

Lions 8, American Legion 7: Jeremy Barron and Preston Button each had home runs for Lions. John Courtney and Christian Binferd each had two hits in the win. Allan Sandburg struck out seven batters and had two hits for American Legion. J.B. Schaffer added two RBI for American Legion.

Conococheage Little League

Reid's 7, Moose 6: Tyler Nally had 13 strikeouts for Reid's. Scott Drury had two hits for Moose.

Post 202 13, Byer's Market 9: Cody Horne, Stephen Christy, Connor Arnone, Austin Baker and Cory Golden had two hits each to lead Post 202. Joey Sutch and Timber Jones had two hits each for Byer's Market.


Funkstown 11, Frederick 1

Matt Murray threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts and Patrick Hutzler added three hits and three RBI, while Nate Steelman hit a three-run double for Funkstown.


Hub City Softball League

Thompson Gas 23, Corbi's Pizza 8: Jerry Jacobson had four hits, while Denny Wallech, Eric Bender, Jimmy Ezolt, Kevin Kretzer, Terry Getridge, Rondey Heller all had three hits for Thompson's Gass. Kretzer and Getridge had homers.

Hagerstown Church Softball

Five Forks 22, Saint Marks 2: Jim Mohn had four hits and four RBI to lead Five Forks.

Tri-State 20, Gateway 13: Mark Malone had four hits for Tri-State.

New Life 20, Otterbein 19: Dave Barnhart had seven hits, John Davidson had six hits and Rob Embly had five hits for New Life.

Otterbein 14, New Life 11: Jay Johnson had seven hits, Kirk Graham had six hits and Nick Maas had a home run for Otterbein.
