Park celebrates early American pioneer life

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Harpers Ferry National Historical Park will host "They Passed This Way," a celebration of cultural heritage, Saturday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The event will include living history displays and demonstrations. Presentations by Colonial Williamsburg actor Bill Barker as Thomas Jefferson and Dick Cheatham as Meriwether Lewis will focus on the 200th anniversary of Meriwether Lewis' visit to Harpers Ferry in preparation for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The afternoon will include music concerts by the Turtle Island Band and the Wildcat Regiment Band. The Turtle Island Band features authentic and contemporary music of the American Indian. The Wildcat Regiment Band specializes in music of 19th-century America.

Saturday's events will conclude with a musical concert honoring the career of 1920 Storer College graduate and jazz music legend, Don Redman. The concert begins at 4:30 p.m. and will feature special guest trumpeters, Snooky Young and Sonny Cohn. They will be backed by the Howard Burns Quartet.
