Roundup - Grier shoots 5-over at North & South

PINEHURST, N.C. - Ashley Grier, a 2002 graduate of Smithsburg who recently finished her freshman year at Jacksonville University, shot a 6-over 78 Monday in the first of two rounds of qualifying for the match play portion of the 101st North & South championships. Grier's round left her tied for 58th place with 18 others.

The top 64 finishers through two rounds qualify for match play, which begins Wednesday.

Aree Song, a 17-year-old from Bradenton, Fla., shot a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke lead.


Inwood's Garcia wins national title

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jose Garcia, of Inwood, W.Va., won a Junior title in the 201-plus weight class at the 2003 Junior Olympic National Championships last weekend.

Garcia defeated Orville Brooks, of New York, 3-2 in the final. He beat William Cisneros, of Miami, and Sione Pouha, of Kansas, Utah, in earlier rounds.


Football camp

A non-contact football camp will be held at Martinsburg High School on July 28-30.


The sessions will be held from 5:30-8p.m and is open to athletes from 3rd through 7th grades. The camp will be instructed by Martinsburg's football staff along with former Bulldogs players.

The pre-registration fee for the camp is $40 or $45 at on the first day of the camp. Applications can be obtained at Martinsburg High from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or from 6-8 p.m. at the weight room at Coubourn Field. Athletes can also register at the Martinsburg football office on July 28.

Men's Softball Tournament

ASA Men's Softball will be holding a Class 'D' torunament on July 5-6 at the Cumberland Recreation Park.

Entry fee is $125 per team with only the first 20 teams being accepted. Prize money will be awarded to first through fourth place.

Lions 8, Kiwanis 4: John Courtney, Christian Binford and Michael Rice had two hits for Lions. Tyquil Benson had two hits for Kiwanis.

Kiwanis 15, Exchange 5: Will Murray had four hits and four RBI for Kiwanis, while Ben Mellott added three hits and four RBI, Jeremy Wood had three hits and Steven Coccodrilli and Chuck Mellott had two hits. For Exchange, Steven Johnson had three hits and John Skinner had two doubles.

American Legion 8, Exchange 2: Conner Spessard, Dakota Durning and Alex Shearer had two hits and Allen Sandberg had three hits for for American Legion. Stephen Johnson had two hits for Exchange.

Wash. Co. Girls Softball

High School Division

Ace 28, Middletown Sportsland 12: Dee Brown tripled, homered and drove in five runs, Terri Gordon had three hits and three RBI, Morgan Brown had two hits and four RBI and Ashley Creek had two hits and three RBI for Ace.

Aladdin Awards 15, Lightning Transport 3: For Aladdin Awards, Jess Marshal had four hits while Misty Marker and Emily Sirface each had two hits. Lucy Alencherry had two hits for Lightning Transport.

Hagerstown PONY League

Goodwill 12, Firefighters 8: Aaron Mills went 4-for-4 with a homer and five RBI, Ryan Wilson had two hits, including a homer, and Alan Knight had two hits for Goodwill. Patrick Phillips had three hits, while Danny Reed, Nick Roberts and Carl Spessard had two hits for Firefighters.

Elks 16, F&M 4: Scott Myers went 4-for-4 with a home run, and drove in five runs to lead Elks. Tim Leather added three hits, including a homer, and Austin Barkdoll had a three-run homer in the win. Guido Roche hit a grand slam for F&M.

West End Little League

AFL-CIO 17, Elks 9: Aaron Stoner had four hits, Chase Worthington had two homers and Seth Near had three hits for AFL-CIO. Cody Miller had two hits for Elks.

VFW 24, Elks 8: Cody Murray had four RBI, Dustin Smith had two hits, Dustin Rowland had three hits, including a homer, and Casey Shifler and Kenny Kitchen had two hits for VFW.

Valley Little League

St. Lawrence Cement 4, Total Lube 2: Jason kendall pitched a three-hitter, while Jacob Gouff had two hits and Michael Rishell had two RBI for St. Lawrence. Taylor Metzger had two hits and Cory Kerr homered for Total Lube.

Halfway Little League

Hoffman Auto 3, Redmen 0: Aaron Stotelmyer threw a four-hit shutout and Andrew Duff had two hits to lead Hoffman Auto. Zach Weber had two hits for Redmen.

Redmen 17, Lions 5: Zach Weber and Tyler Miles each had three hits for Redmen. John Moser had two hits, including a home run, Cody Hadley had two hits, including a grand slam, and Joe Miller had two hits. Cody Whiteman pitched a complete-game six-hitter. Bobby Asper had two hits for Lions.

Hagerstown Colt League

FOP 13, Ruritan 5: Justin Marshall, Matt Dixon, Kenny Singhas and Jake Johnson had two hits each to lead FOP. David Kendle had three hits to lead Ruritan while Mike Hamby and Josh McNabb added two hits.

Conococheague Minors

Valley 19, Yankees 14: Mark Trumpower and Aaron Taylor had three hits each whle Jordan Gladden, Ryan Minella, Jacob Hughes, Dillon Footen and Trent Irving had two hits each for Valley.
