Images from comic books from the late 1930s to the present are combined with interviews with creators such as Stan Lee to tell the superheroes' stories. Among other things, they had to survive heavy censorship in the 1950s after being accused of being bad influences on children.

9 p.m. on USA

"AFI Award: Robert De Niro"

The actor receives the American Film Institute's 31st annual Life Achievement Award. (De Niro's life in films may be far from over, but the trend is to honor people who still are in the spotlight.)

10 p.m. on ABC

"An American Celebration at Ford's Theatre"

Celebrities entertain President Bush and Laura Bush at the annual event to benefit the theater. This year's lineup includes host Kelsey Grammer and singer Brian McKnight.
