Relay for Life raises more than $50,000

Organizers were still tallying the official totals Saturday, but this weekend's Relay for Life had clearly raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society, said event chairman Larry Wegner.

That didn't quite reach the organizers' $100,000 goal, Wegner said, but he suspected threatening weather Friday night had affected the event.

"We had a lot of teams that didn't show up," he said.

Braver souls not only showed up at the South Hagerstown High School athletic field but stayed all night.

"I won't say everybody who was there made it all night, because they never do. But we had a lot of people for our closing ceremony" Saturday morning, Wegner said.

And as it turned out, "we had no rain at all," he said. "Everybody had a good time."
