Trooper collides with train

June 21, 2003

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Pennsylvania state trooper received minor injuries and his cruiser was severely damaged when it was hit by a train at a crossing on Kriner Road on Thursday evening, state police said.

Trooper Mario Schiavo was treated at Chambersburg Hospital and released, police said.

Cpl. Gregory Edgin is investigating the incident. He said the cruiser Schiavo was driving, a marked 2001 Ford, was so badly damaged it won't be back on the road.

Police said Schiavo was responding to a fight in another area shortly after 8 p.m. when he crossed the railroad tracks on Kriner Road about a mile from U.S. 11 in Guilford Township.

His cruiser was struck by an eastbound Norfolk and Southern Railroad train.

The crossing is controlled by flashing lights.
