June 17, 2003|by JACK HILL III

FUNKSTOWN - David Miner got the job done on the mound and at the plate for Funkstown Post 211.

Miner (3-0) allowed two runs and struck out eight in seven innings and added three hits and two RBI on offense as Funkstown defeated Mt. Airy 6-2 Monday evening in American Legion baseball.

Funkstown (11-6, 4-3) stands a half-game behind Mt. Airy (9-4, 5-3) in the district standings.

"My pitching was all right," Miner said. "It could have been a little bit better. At times, I just kept throwing the ball up. I just had to work it back down. ... I just have to work hard and stay under control.

"They got me the runs and the defense was good. We hit the ball well. We have just got to keep doing it for the rest of the year and, hopefully, we'll win the state championship."

Matt Tedrick, Gerry Spessard and Phillip Powell added two hits each for Funkstown, which busted the game open with a four-run, six-hit fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-1.

"In that fifth inning when we got four runs, I think that broke Mt. Airy's back," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "We had some great clutch hitting. We played great defense combined with a great pitching performance."

"They hit ground balls that bounced through," Mount Airy coach George Richardson said. "That is just the way it goes."
