A Smithsburg woman died Sunday night as the result of a traffic accident on Md. 64 near Crystal Falls Drive, Maryland State Police said.

Melanie Kay McKenzie, 28, of 13021 Bikle Road, Smithsburg, was the middle sister of three who had moved from Cumberland, Md., several years ago to the area be near their mother, said McKenzie's sister, Jessica Wilson, 30.

"We couldn't stay apart," Wilson said Monday morning.

Police said McKenzie was driving west on Md. 64 at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday when her 1996 Acura Integra crossed the center line and struck a guardrail, police said. She was thrown from the car, police said.

Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services took McKenzie to Washington County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

McKenzie was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Wilson said family members had gathered from Frostburg, Md., LaVale, Md. and Ocean City, Md., upon hearing about her sister's death.

None of the family knew where she had been, but assumed she was heading home before the accident.

Wilson said McKenzie was part of a loving family.

"She, even through some troubled times, tried her best to care for her (daughter). She'll be greatly missed," Wilson said.

"I loved her. ... She didn't deserve to be gone now," Wilson said.
