Suns split twinbill vs. Captains

June 16, 2003

EASTLAKE, Ohio - It took eight tries, but the Hagerstown Suns finally found a way to defeat the Lake County Captains.

Doubles by Fred Lewis and Derin McMains gave the Suns a quick 1-0 lead in the second game of a doubleheader, and Matt Cain allowed one run in six strong innings before Matt Palmer closed the door on a 4-1 victory over the Captains Sunday evening.

Lake County spoiled a fine effort from the Suns' Clay Hensley in the opener, pulling out a 1-0 victory with Keith Ramsey pitching a complete-game, two-hit shutout for his eighth win of the season. The win was the Captains' seventh in seven games against the Suns.

That streak ended a couple of hours later.

Carlos Sosa's swinging bunt drove in McMains with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and errors in the second and fifth innings gave the Suns their other two runs.

Cain (5-3) struck out six in his six innings, allowing singles to Jon Van Every and Micah Schilling in the third inning to account for Lake County's only run. Palmer retired the side in the seventh for his 13th save.

In the opener, Hensley (4-3) went six innings but received no run support. Lake County's run came in the second when Ben Francisco doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on Sosa's throwing error. Francisco scored on Bryan Kent's RBI single.
