State asks drivers to use detour

June 14, 2003

The Maryland State Highway Administration is asking drivers to follow detour instructions posted for a project near Boonsboro.

The state is reconstructing 1.9 miles of U.S. 40 Alternate between west of Md. 67 Rohrersville Road in Washington County and the Frederick County line, the agency said in a news release.

On Thursday, the state closed U.S. 40 Alternate between Clevelandtown and Moser roads for construction of a 300-foot retaining wall, the release said. The road is scheduled to reopen August 17.

Some drivers on Thursday and Friday ignored posted construction detour routes and drove on local roads which may be unable to handle heavier traffic volumes and the weight of large trucks, the release said.

The state also asks motorists to look for signs and to drive carefully through the work zone and detour routes. During paving work, shoulder and single-lane closures may occur along U.S. 40 Alternate and Md. 67 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
