WILLIAMSPORT - Funkstown Post 211 used good pitching in both games to sweep Williamsport Post 202, 5-2 and 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in a Western Maryland District American Legion baseball doubleheader.

The first game counted in the district standings, as Funkstown (7-4, 3-2 district) moved into a tie for first place in the district with Mount Airy (2-1 district).

"The first game was a district game, so that was a good win," Funkstown manager Darryl Powell said. "We got a good pitching performance. T.J. Hose threw a lot of pitches, but he was still in control. Cole Bellon came in and did a good job in relief."

Hose surrendered just one earned run in four innings for the win. Bellon hurled three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save.

Funkstown went up 2-1 in the top of the second inning on a leadoff single by Matt Allen and a two-run homer by Gerry Spessard.

After Williamsport (6-5, 2-3) tied the game with a run in the last of the second, Funkstown scored a run in the fourth to take the lead for good at 3-2. With one out, Spessard singled to center and Kyle Robinson walked. Phillip Powell then came through with an RBI single to right.

Funkstown got its final two runs in the seventh. Powell led off with a single to left, and, two outs later, David Miner crushed a 380-foot, two-run homer to straightaway center field.

"We didn't play bad, they just played a little bit better than us," Williamsport manager Rick Keefer said. "We left too many runners on base. We just didn't take advantage of the opportunities that we had in both games. Funkstown just played good. They deserved to win."

Powell was also impressed with his team's performance during the second game.

"In the second game, Josh Carter had three of our five hits and three RBI," Powell said. "Josh Carter continues to come through in clutch situations and sparks our offense. Josh Bussard had a great pitching performance. Shawn Ryan came on in relief and shut the door."

Bussard got the victory by giving up only one run in four innings. Ryan got the save with three scoreless innings of relief.

Carter had an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the fifth. Miner added two hits and scored two runs.

Zeb Jacobs led Williamsport with two hits.
