Body Mass Index

June 09, 2003

The Centers for Disease Control Web site has a calculator for determining Body Mass Index, or BMI: Go to

www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm and plug in your height and weight.

Or do the math: weight in pounds, divided by height in inches, divided by height in inches again - multiplied by 703.

A BMI of 25 to 29.9 identifies a person as overweight; 30 and above is considered obese. BMI shows body weight adjusted for height. There are no adjustments for muscle mass.
