Area roundup - Carter leads Funkstown past Maryland Redbirds

FUNKSTOWN - Josh Carter went 4-for-5 with a home run to lead Funkstown to an 8-7 victory over the Maryland Redbirds on Friday.

Matt Hess went 3-for-4, while winning pitcher David Miner and Kyle Robinson each added two hits for Funkstown (5-4, 2-2).

Tyler Young hit a solo homer for the Redbirds.


Funkstown 4, Frederick 2

Jeremy McAfee threw a one-hitter with 7 strikeouts, and Orland Dean had three hits, including a game-winning two-run triple for Funkstown. Nate Steelman had three hits and Patrick Hutzler had two hits for Funkstown.


Leopards' Belella signs with Bridgewater

Smithsburg senior Lisa Belella recently signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va., beginning this fall.

Belella was a 2002 Herald-Mail All-Area second-team member as a goalkeeper and midfielder for Smithsburg, which advanced to the Maryland 1A finals for the second straight year.

Lions Club 9, Mace Auto Body 1: Tyler Burgan went 3-for-3 with two home runs, Josh Conway had three hits and Jeff Wilson had two hits for the Lions Club. Jacob Steich had three hits for Mace.

Wash. Co. Girls Softball

Capital Builders 13, Quad State 0: Emily Huff led Capital with two triples, while Kalli Rexrode, Kari Smith and Jessica Bennett each had two hits. Huff, Bennett and Kelly Beard combined on a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Taylor's Sluggers 18, Police Athletic League 12: Taylor Shafer had two hits and three RBI, Tara Shafer had two hits and two RBI, Dianne Draper had three hits and Maegan Taylor doubled for Taylor's Sluggers. Jessica Patty had two hits and two RBI and Sara Duffy had two hits and three RBI for Police Athletic League.

Elementary Division

IAFF 10, Antietam Title 7: Kylie Comer and Stephanie Shubel each had two doubles while Kelsey Jarvis, Erin Asper and Leelee Love combined pitching efforts for IAFF. Becky Young hit two doubles for Antietam Title.

M&J Fundraising 5, Subway 3: Lauren Abbott struck out 12, while Loganne Smith and Gabrielle Mullin each had two hits for M&J.

National Little League

Paul Crampton Construction 19, AMVETS 8: Brandon Mullendore had four hits, R.J. Roby and Adrian Adams had two hits each and Brandon Knight homered for Crampton. John Hughes had two hits for AMVETS.

National 7-8

Antietam Fire Co. 5, Funkstown Legion 5: Charlie Dietrich had two hits for Antietam. Scott Bennett and Keith Johnson each had two hits for Funkstown Legion.

Conococheague Minor

Reid's 7, M&T 6: Ricky Long and Zachary Esheleman each had two hits for M&T. Tyler Nally had two hits and struck out eight for Reid's.

Moose 13, Sportsland 1: Andrew Minella and Kory Harp combined on a two-hitter for Moose. Minella, Harp, Brandon Morales and Kellen Reaver each had two hits.

Junior Interleague

Sycamore Associates 4, Redmen 3: Ryan Lipella had two hits and Joe Schildt and Bobby Smith combined to pitch a five-hitter for Sycamore. Jesse Mason had two hits and struck out eight while Patrick Hammond had two hits for Redmen.

Maugansville Senior League

Larry Allen 6, Ruritan 5: Brian Barnhart had three hits and Josh Koontz and Kent Worthington each had two hits for Larry Allen. Doug Jones, John Lytle, Ryan Rau and J.D. Kline each had two hits for Ruritan.

Maugansville Little League

Brewer's Saab 9, Maugans Oil 5: Craig Sharon and Adam Plume each had three hits, while Alec Long, Brad Kiracofe and Josh Henry each had two for Brewer's. Brandon Glazer had three hits for Maugans Oil.

Maugansville Junior

Carbaugh's Tree Service 11, Spicher's 8: Joe Bowers had three hits, while Cory Forsyth, Tyler Hornbaker and Bobby Mothershead each had two for Carbaugh's. Robert Gaver had two hits for Spicher's.

Hagerstown PONY League

Goodwill 12, Redmen 4: Marcellus Sumlin pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and had two hits of for Goodwill, while Aaron Mills and David Harman each had two hits, Zach Shoemaker had three hits and three RBI and Harman had two RBI. Mark Dattilio had two hits for Redmen.

Eagles 7, F&M 5: Ryan Heavner pitched a complete game with 14 strikeouts, while Kyle Beers hit a two-run home run and Brock Kettoman added two RBI for the Eagles. Kyle Kane had three RBI and a solo home run for F&M.

Clear Spring Little League

A's 11, Yankees 1: Bruce Mills pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts, while Sam Mills had two hits, including a homer, for the A's.

A's 12, Yankees 4: Cody Butts and Bruce Mills combined to strike out 11, while Sam Mills and Bruce Mills had two hits apiece for the A's.

Federal Little League

American Legion 6, Exchange 3: Allen Sandberg had 13 strikeouts, while Connor Spessard, Alex Shearer and Joe Blackwood each had two hits for American Legion. Alyssa Collier and Steven Johnson each had two hits for Exchange.
