Poker Run to benefit library

June 04, 2003

SMITHSBURG - The second annual Smithsburg Library Poker Run is set to get under way June 22 to raise funds by combining the popular card game with the joys of motorcycling.

"It's about a 100-mile course with five stations where participants stop and get cards," said Pat Monahan, one of the organizers. At the end, prizes are given for the four best poker hands.

Prizes are $100 for first, $75 for second, $50 for third and $25 for fourth.

The fund-raiser is the latest in a capital campaign under way to raise money for the construction of a bigger library to serve the Smithsburg area.

The current 1,096-square-foot library on East Water Street will be replaced by a 10,000-square-foot library in Veterans Memorial Park on West Water Street.

Sign-up for this year's Poker Run will begin at 11 a.m. at Veteran's Park with the last vehicle leaving at 1 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded at 4:30 p.m.

The $15-per-player registration fee will buy each player five cards.

At the last poker run stop, players will have the opportunity to exchange all or part of their dealt hands for new cards at a cost of $1 each, Monahan said.

Those wishing more information may call the Smithsburg Library at 301-824-7722.
