Answer: Because in this country there are a multitude of groups which legitimately thrive on what the crime/drug complex provides for them. This includes lawyers, judges, police and jailers, to name just a few. That's what it is really all about - socialistic profiteering; not wholly, but to a very high degree! All the while our drug/crime problems worsen.

Most of what makes for more crime and more drugs to reduce the life quality of average Americans, are the federal laws and policies that fly-in-the-face of proven successes in other countries. This is an absurdity we must all look at squarely!

I have an answer to this sociological dilemma, by way of a suggested proposal I think all civic-minded persons should consider adapting to in some variance of form.

Let us suppose that a mayor and city council would sue the U.S. Congress for the dispensational right, and financing for, a single citywide trial of social drug maintenance for all the crime prone addicts within the city of, say Hagerstown. This would include an objective drug treatment option as well. Let us say such an experimental program would have an agreed duration of two years so figures could be compared and evaluated. And, please, let no one put methadone into this mix, since that program only serves a person who is strong and resolute on ending his/her habit of drug use.

Sen. Byrd has lost it

To the editor:

I recently attended an out-of-town wedding and it provided me with an opportunity to see some old friends and meet some new people. The old friends who knew I had moved to West Virginia and the new ones, when they found out where I lived, all ask me the same question immediately.

What the heck is going on with Robert Byrd, is he as nonsensical as he acts? My response was yes to all of the above.

The reason these people ask this question is because they cannot believe the incessant ranting of Byrd because the president visited the sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. I believe Clinton did the same thing while he was in office.

It really does cause one to think is this man is unfit office. I would have to say after viewing his last disgraceful and embarrassing speech on TV that he is not fit. Please leave office now, senator, so that the good people of West Virginia can travel this country. And when asked where they are from, they can say "wild and wonderful West Virginia" without fear of embarrassment caused by you.

Activities help

To the editor:

Many parents of elementary school age children may have some anxiety concerning adolescent years. My experience and observation has led me to believe that parents need to help children find activities (sports, music, jobs) that keep adolescents developing skills. Likewise I would be remiss if I excluded clubs (Scouts, 4-H and others) and church activities. All of these activities are builders of self-esteem.

For some children and adolescents, the search for activities that are a match for a particular individual may take more than one attempt. I am convinced there is an activity for each and every child and in many cases more than one.

We are blessed in the Tri-State region with so many organizations that build the character of our youth. Likewise we are blessed in that we have so many adults giving of their time and talents to work with the youth of the area.

I encourage all parents to help their children find activities that they can both enjoy and will build the character.
