Hundreds lose electric power in area Saturday

June 01, 2003

Power outages hit several portions of the Tri-State area Saturday, an Allegheny Energy spokesman said.

About 700 customers in the Frederick, Md., area lost power around 4:15 p.m. because winds knocked down power lines, Allegheny spokesman Mike Grandillo said.

About 300 customers in the Bunker Hill, W.Va., area lost power at 9:15 p.m. because a vehicle knocked down a utility pole, according to Grandillo and the 911 dispatch center for Berkeley County, W.Va.

Allegheny crews hoped to restore power to both areas by midnight, he said.

Power was restored to about 150 customers in the Sharpsburg area around 7:30 p.m., Grandillo said. They had lost power at 3:30 p.m. after equipment was damaged. Grandillo said it wasn't clear whether lightning played a factor in that outage.

Another 100 homes scattered throughout Washington and Frederick counties and another 50 homes in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle also lost power Saturday, he said.
