Car found in creek

May 27, 2003

Washington County rescue groups responded Monday night to a report of a car seen going into Conococheague Creek but nobody appeared to be harmed, said Richard Prather, safety officer of the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Department.

About 8 p.m. there was a report of a car going into the creek at Kemps Mill Road and U.S. 40, Prather said.

Rescue groups, using divers and boats, later found a car about 3/4 of a mile south of U.S. 40 near Gateway Avenue, he said. Other agencies, including the Maryland State Police, assisted in responding to the emergency.

The car was not completely submerged and the windows were at least partway down, so if anyone was inside, he or she would have been able to get out safely, Prather said.

There were no eyewitnesses and nobody from the car was found, he said.

The car appeared to have recently been driven into the creek, he said.
