Peters, Lacey place at D-II nationals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Shippensburg University senior Matt Peters, a 1998 South Hagerstown High School graduate, and sophomore Tunisia Lacey, a 2001 Chambersburg High grad, both earned All-American honors for the first time Friday evening at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Peters placed fourth in the men's discus with a throw of 165 feet, 3 inches. Northwest Missouri's Clint Prague won the event in 178-3.

Lacey finished sixth in the women's triple jump with a leap of 40-3 1/2. North Dakota State's Amanda Thieschafer topped the field in 42-5 1/4.

The top eight finishes in each event are All-Americans.


Andrews wins PIAA silver

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg junior Jen Andrews turned in the area's top finish during the first day of action at the PIAA Track & Field State Championships at Shippensburg University.


Andrews placed second in the Class AAA girls shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 1 inch. Villam's Ann Mari Thompson topped the field at 41-3 1/4, while Greencastle junior Alicia Thompson went 36-3 1/4 for sixth.

Waynesboro junior Nick Kipe placed fifth in the AAA boys triple jump (45-10 1/4), while James Buchanan senior Allen Pettner took fifth in the AA boys javelin (183-10).

The meet concludes today.

Bess takes third for Patriots

CATONSVILLE,Md. - Thomas Johnson's Matt Bess captured the area's only medal during the opening day for classes 4A and 3A at the Maryland Track & Field State Championships at University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Bess placed third in the Class 4A boys shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 6 inches, while TJ's boys 3,200-meter relay team finished fourth in 8:14.59.

Frederick's Ronnie Beard took fourth in the Class 4A boys high jump (22-0 1/4), and turned in the day's top time in the 110 hurdles trials (14.68). Quenton Beard also qualified for the 110 hurdles finals, taking fourth in his heat (15.83).

Frederick's Imani White won her heat in the Class 4A girls 100 trials in 11.88.

The meet concludes today for all four classes.


Funkstown 6, Harford 2

FUNKSTOWN - Phil Powell and Drew Crawford each had two hits and an RBI to lead Funkstown Legion to a season-opening vicory over Harford Legion in the Dave Phillips Memorial Tournament.

Jeff Mills pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits for the win. Bryson Appel also had two hits for Funkstown (1-0).

Williamsport 10, Charles Town 1

WILLIAMSPORT - Adam Mills tossed a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as Williamsport Legion defeated Charles Town in 4 1/2 innings at the Dave Phillips Memorial Tournament.

Josh Bowers and Aaron Davis hit back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning for Williamsport (1-0).


Federal Little League

Kiwanis 9, Exchange 0: Jeremy Wood and Will Murray combined to toss a one-hit shuout with 13 strikeouts to lead Kiwanis. Tyquil Benson had three hits, while Murray and Ben Mellott each added two and Robbie Hanson homered.

Senior Interleague

Jeter Paving 7, South County 0: Josh Daniels pitched a complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts, while Joe Acre had two hits for Jeter.

Hagerstown PONY League

Eagles 4, Goodwill 1: Ryan Heavner pitched a complete-game with seven strikeouts for the win, while Kyle Hoffman homered for the Eagles.

Halfway Little League

Redmen 9, Gehr 6: John Moser homered and Tyler Miles had two hits for Redmen.

Maugansville Junior League

Shawley's 11, Maugansville Ruritan 6: David Kendal had three hits, including a two-run homer, to lead Shawley's.

West End Little League

Moose 11, VFW 3: J.J. O'Neill pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts, while Josh Mentzer and Kyler Head had two hits each to lead Moose. Dustin Smith led VFW with two hits.

Maugansville Little League

Home Care 10, Burkholder's 5: Brent Bell had two hits, including a home run, to lead Home Care. Adam Griemsmann also had two hits in the win. Corey Morgan led Burkholder's with two hits.

Clear Spring Little League

A's 8, Cubs 7: Sam Mills had 11 strikeouts and added two hits at the plate to lead the A's. Corey Schrader had nine strikeouts and Austin Yost had two hits for the Cubs.

South Mountain Little League

Lions 8, Pete's Barber Shop 7: Troy Hartle had three hits and Brandon Foote added two to lead Lions. Josh Danner, Sean Colgan and Chris Palmer had two hits each for Pete's.

Conococheague Minor League

Moose 9, Neikirk's 7: Brandon Iseminger had two hits to lead Moose. Brandon Draper had two hits for Neikirk's.

Wash. Co. Girls Softball

Allen Hewett Investigations 18, Paul Crampton Contractors 0: Bridgette Ringley, Jetta Williams and Courtney Long combined for a no-hitter to lead Allen Hewitt. Ringley, Long and Ashley Zandy had three hits each, while Lori Strunk added two. Zandy and Strunk homered.
