Life jacket tips

May 23, 2003

Before buying a life jacket, read the label to see if it is Coast Guard-approved.

Make sure the jacket fits properly. Try it out in a swimming pool or other controlled setting, such as the shallow waters of a lake. Does it hold you above water?

Each year, check older jackets for dry-rot or other damage. Straps should be secure. Stitching should be intact.

The Department of Natural Resources offers free Water Wise programs for all age groups. Interested groups may schedule a program by calling the Natural Resources Police Western Region office at 301-777-7771.
