MVAL expansion set for fall

May 22, 2003

THURMONT, Md. - Though the move had been well-known and publicized for months, it officially was announced Wednesday: The Monocacy Valley Athletic League is expanding this fall.

The MVAL will grow from 10 to 22 teams by absorbing the nine-team Central Maryland Conference and adding three other schools - Clear Spring, Tuscarora and Winters Mill.

The move was announced in conjunction with the final MVAL banquet in the league's current form at the Cozy Country Inn.

The new MVAL will be broken into three conferences - Antietam, Piedmont and Chesapeake - based primarily on enrollment figures. Conference champions and all-conference teams will be awarded for each division.

The smaller conferences will give the schools more flexibility in scheduling, allowing them to continue games with old rivals while seeking new non-conference opponents.

The expansion marks the first change in the MVAL since North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown joined the league in 1989.

Antietam Conference

North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, Williamsport, Brunswick, Boonsboro, Catoctin, Smithsburg, Clear Spring

Chesapeake Conference

Westminster, Thomas Johnson, North Carroll, Urbana, Linganore, Frederick, Liberty

Piedmont Conference

Middletown, Century, Francis Scott Key, Tuscarora, Winters Mill, South Carroll, Walkersville
