Roundup - Smith leads Indians to section title

FRANKFORT, W.Va. - Maggie Smith tossed a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts as Berkeley Springs downed Petersburg 12-0 in the Region 1 Section 4 championship game on Tuesday.

The Indians (19-10) will move on to Morgantown for the regional championship Friday at 5 p.m. against either Tyler Consolidated or Weir.

Julie Scherpf had a double, two singles and two RBI while Amanda Willard had a pair of doubles and an RBI to lead Berkeley Springs.

Northern Bedford 1 Southern Fulton 0

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Southern Fulton finished its season with a loss to Northern Bedford, allowing the run to score on a pair of errors.


Bethany Mellott struck out eight and allowed only one hit for the Indians (7-11).

McConnellsburg 5 Tussey Mountain 4

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Heather DeShong drove in Darcy Everetts with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game for McConnellsburg.

This game was the final regular-season game for the Spartans (11-8) and was a makeup game from a May 1 suspension. The game was picked up in the third inning with a scoreless tie.


Mercersburg 3 Chestnut Hill 2

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Garrett Fix's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Alex Laddbush and put Mercersburg Academy (10-6) over Chestnut Hill Academy in the first round of the Pa. State Private School playoffs.

Sidwell 3, St. James 2

WASHINGTON - Alex Bust had two hits, but St. James stranded 10 runners in a Mid Atlantic Conference loss to Sidwell Friends.

The Saints finish the season 1-15, 1-11 in the conference.

Heritage 10 Broadfording 3

Joe Ellis had two doubles, Brian Sandell added two hits and Jesse Latta claimed the pitching victory for Heritage Academy as the Eagles (7-4) defeated Broadfording Christian Academy in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference championship game.

John Lytle had three hits and both Allen Myers and Mikkel Wallech two hits for the Lions.

The Heights 4, Goretti 0

POTOMAC, Md. - Tim Berset's two-run double in the four-run fifth inning was the big blow by The Heights as they defeated St. Maria Goretti in the Maryland Private Schools Class 'B' championship.

Phil Dorsey and Mason Herman had the only hits for the Gaels (5-16).

Martinsburg 9 Hedgesville 2

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jeff Horst homered for Martinsburg, as the Bulldogs defeated Hedgesville in a West Virginia Class AAA Region 1, Section 4 matchup.

Dirk Webb hit a solo homer in the first inning for the Eagles (12-11).


Hagerstown 3, Jefferson 1

Zack Swisher and Danny Fowler had two hits apiece as the Hagerstown Braves (3-0) defeated the Jefferson Dodgers.

Swisher hit an RBI single in the second, P.J. Hiser had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Josh Delawter scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for the Braves' runs.


Longmire named All-PSAC

SHIPPNENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University's Jennifer Longmire, a Chambersburg High grad, was named to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference second team.

Longmire, who played No. 2 singles for the Red Raiders, had a 12-2 record on the year. She went 12-8 in doubles action.


Maugansville Senior League

Larry Allen 11, Hagerstown Trust 1: Josh Koontz, Kent Worthington and Brian Barnhart each had two hits for Larry Allen. Barnhart struck out 11 in a three-hitter.

Federal Little League

American Legion 12, Alsatia 1: Alan Sandberg had three hits while Joe Blackwood, Nathan Malloy, and Dakota Durning each had two hits for American Legion. Max Psillias had two hits for Alsatia.

West End Little League

Moose 18, Stags 3: Josh Mentzer had three hits, including a grand slam and another home run, and drove in six runs while J.J. O'Neill had two home runs and six RBI and Josh Smith had two hits for Moose.

West End Minor League

Western Enterprise 8, Woodpoint 2: Eric Martell and Terry Mumma had three hits each, while Gary Linton and Evante Naylor both had two hits for Western Enterprise. Dustin Hawks and Matt Hassell both had three hits while Bobby Leatherman and Tray Boyd both had two hits for Woodpoint.

Maugansville Little League

Maugans Oil 6, Burkholders 4: T.J. Socks had three hits and Brandon Glazer and Mike Braithwaite added two hits each for Maugans Oil.

Senior Interleague

Jeter Paving 22, Clear Spring 1: Mike Fox and Wayne Rumbaugh both had three hits while Josh Daniels, Jimbo Harmon and Bruce Storms had two hits apiece and Rumbaugh homered twice for Jeter.

Hancock Little League

Yankees 4, Pirates 3: Jack Zies had two hits, including a home run, Kyle Smith drove in the winning run and Jesse Smartt and Zies combined for 12 strikeouts in eight innings for the Yankees. Josh Hall had three hits and struck out 15, while Ben Hoopengardner, Ethan Martin and Justin Berkstresser each had two hits for the Pirates.

Wash. Co. Girls Softball

Taylors 13, Ernst Market 1: Taylor Shafer had three hits and Chris Creek had two triples for Taylors.
