Another day of rain washes out schedule

May 17, 2003

It's become a familiar headline this spring - "Rain washes out local events."

It was the same old story Friday, as heavy rains and flooding forced the postponement of playoff baseball and softball games, a regional tennis tournament and a regional track meet.

Many games were pushed back until today, while some moved games to Monday.

The Maryland Class 1A West track meet will be run today at 10 a.m. at Smithsburg High School. The 2A West meet at Middletown, which began Thursday, will continue today at 10 a.m.

The Region I tennis tournament, originally scheduled as a two-day event, will be played today at North Hagerstown beginning at 9 a.m.

The Class 1A West semifinal baseball game featuring South Hagerstown and Smithsburg will be played this afternoon at 4 at Williamsport.

The winner of that game will play in the region final against Southern Garrett, which beat Allegany 11-7 Friday in its semifinal game. If Smithsburg wins, the Leopards will travel to Oakland for the game. Southern will play at South Hagerstown if the Rebels advance.

The 1A West final likely will be Monday. The 1A state semifinal games are scheduled for Tuesday at McCurdy Field in Frederick.

In other games today, Middletown travels to Glenelg for the 2A West softball final, while Walkersville plays host to Atholton in the 2A West baseball final. Both games are scheduled to begin at noon.

In addition to the 1A West baseball game, one other region baseball final and two softball finals will be played Monday. Brunswick and Catoctin will play in both the 1A South baseball and softball finals at Catoctin at 4, while Beall travels to Smithsburg for the 1A West softball final.
