MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police charged a Hagerstown man with armed robbery Wednesday after receiving tips that he was involved in a robbery at a Berkeley County 7-Eleven store.

Dale Anthony Shoop, 32, of Mount Tabor Road, was charged with one felony count of armed robbery.

The robbery happened on Sunday, May 4, at the 7-Eleven on Berkeley Station Road. The robber, who wore a ski mask and wielded a gun, took $26 from a Berkeley County 7-Eleven store.

After a person gave the gun used in the robbery to police and named Shoop as the robber, police obtained a warrant to search the home of Shoop's girlfriend. In a van there, police seized clothes, shoes and a ski mask like the one worn during the robbery, said Lt. K.C. Bohrer with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The gun handed over to investigators is a double-barrel handgun capable of firing both shotgun shells and .410-caliber bullets. A clerk at the 7-Eleven identified it as the one used during the robbery, Bohrer said.

Bohrer said the robbery charge may be handled in U.S. District Court because Shoop is a convicted felon and a registered sex offender in Washington County.

Shoop was being held Wednesday in Eastern Regional Jail on $50,000 bail.

A conviction on an armed robbery charge carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
