TJ names coaches, new AD

May 14, 2003

FREDERICK, Md. - Tim Abercrombie knows his new shoes will be roomy, but says he has a comfortable feeling that he has what is needed to keep them tied.

Abercrombie was selected to replace longtime Thomas Johnson basketball coach Tom Dickman, who leaves the school after 29 years on the scholastic bench to start the men's basketball program at Division III Hood College.

But after five years as Dickman's assistant, Abercrombie says he knows that filling his former boss' sneakers won't be easy, but won't be undaunting either.

"If I had been coming in from outside the program, it might be," Abercrombie said. "I've coached all the kids that we will have next year when they were in ninth grade, so I will know all of them. We start building them with the same system that the varsity uses when they start out there.

"I'm a big believer of our system and it's in place. Plus we get a huge influx of players every year and they are players who come in here and want to play."

The boys' basketball job was one of three filled by TJ on Tuesday. Steve Nibbs was named to replace Dickman as the Patriots' athletic director while Don Brady was selected TJ's new football coach.

Brady replaces Gary Liddick, who led the Patriots to a 9-11 record in two years at TJ. Liddick has taken over the football program at North County High School in Glen Burnie, Md.

Last Friday, Amy Schmuck was named the Patriots' girls basketball coach.
