Leopards win in eight innings

LONACONING, Md. - David Gouff didn't pitch the win, but he did score the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to lead Smithsburg over Westmar 5-4 in the Class 1A West quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Gouff led off the inning with a single and stole second. Brad Jennings hit a deep fly ball to left field. Gouff tagged up and headed to third, but the shorstop threw away the relay, allowing Gouff to score the go-ahead run.

Brandon Fisher (2-0), who relieved Gouff with two out in the seventh, shut down the Wildcats in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

The Leopards (9-8) trailed 1-0 in the top of the seventh before finally breaking through for four runs, on RBI singles from Jennings, Wayne Rumbaugh and Nate Steelman and a sacrifice fly by T.J. Bowser.


The Wildcats (10-7) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Gouff, Jennings and Rumbaugh each had two hits for the Leopards, who must now wait for two results before they find out who they will play in the semifinals.

South Hagerstown is scheduled to play at Northern Garrett today, with Clear Spring playing that winner on Thursday. Smithsburg will play the survivor on Friday.

C. Valley 3, Waynesboro 2

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Cumberland Valley scored three runs in the top of the sixth and held off Waynesboro in the second round of the Mid-Penn Class AAA playoffs.

Ryan Looper's two-run triple tied the score at 2-2 and Ryan Henderson followed with a bloop single to put CV in front.

A.J. Freelove was the hard-luck loser for the Indians (13-6), allowing six hits while striking out four. He didn't give up a hit through four innings.

Brock Emery had two hits for Waynesboro, which plays the Lower Dauphin-Central Dauphin loser at Waynesboro today at 4:15.

Martinsburg 15 Berkeley Springs 0

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Brandon Wagoner and Brandon Armentrout both had three hits and three RBI and the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the first inning to cruise to a victory.

Mark Richmond hit a two-run homer, while Jeff Horst hit a two-run single, walked three times and stole two bases for Martinsburg (14-12).

Walkersville 4, Century 1

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Cole Kidwell struck out three in a complete-game two-hitter to lead Walkersville to victory over Century.

Tyler Redick drove in two runs while Josh Jacobson and Pat Blake each added an RBI for the Lions (12-5).

Old Mill 9, Frederick 6

FREDERICK, Md. - Chad Fisher had two hits and drove in three runs for Frederick, but the Cadets fell to top-ranked Old Mill in a Class 4A West quarterfinal.

Bill Gross had two hits and two RBI for Frederick (6-10).

North 3, Centennial 1

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Winning pitcher T.J. Hose threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out nine for North Hagerstown in the Hubs' Class 2A West victory over Centennial.

Trevor Hullinger, Matt Tedrick, and Danny Zamora each drove in a run for North (12-7).

Jefferson 3, Hedgesville 0

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Matt Yurish struck out 14 and allowed just one hit, but came out the hard-luck loser for Hedgesville.

Trey Hockman had two hits and stole two bases and Matt Bartgis added two hits for the Eagles (12-8).

Juwaan Holmes had the only hit for Jefferson (25-7). Holmes got the win for the Cougars, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out five.

Mechanicsburg 3 Chambersburg 2

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dan Amon hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 2-1 lead over Chambersburg and Mechanicsburg added another run to defeat the Trojans.

Irvin Sleighter tossed a complete game with 13 strikeouts in the loss. Sleighter also had an RBI single and Drew McGwin had an RBI double for the Trojans (15-4).


Boonsboro 8, Allegany 5

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Shannon Davis had two doubles and two RBI as Boonsboro knocked off second-seeded Allegany in a Class 1A West matchup.

Andi Changuris had two hits and Caroline Woodhams knocked in two runs for the Warriors (6-14).

Middletown 2, Atholton 0

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Emily Warrenfeltz tossed a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Middletown to a 2A West region quarterfinal victory over Atholton.

Warrenfeltz also led the Knights with two hits and an RBI, while Erin Burtner also drove in a run.

Middletown (14-3) will now travel to play MVAL foe Francis Scott Key in the regional semifinals today at 4:30.

Beall 3, Hancock 0

FROSTBURG, Md. - Whitney Wilson had two hits and scored two of Beall's runs as the Mountaineers blanked Hancock in the 1A West region quarterfinals.

Hancock concludes its season at 9-6.

McConnellsburg 26 Fannett-Metal 4

WILLOW HILL, Pa. - McConnellsburg scored 26 runs in the third inning to blow past Fannett-Metal in a Sideling Hill League contest.

Steph Paylor belted a grand slam and Kelly Johnston hit a three-run home run in the third for the Spartans (8-8, 7-5). Janine Rasp tripled, while TamI Ulsh and Heather Deshong each doubled in the win.
