Suns work overtime for victory

May 14, 2003

ROME, Ga. - Karl Jernigan unleashed a triple that rolled to the right-center field wall and produced two runs in the 11th inning Tuesday to lift the Hagerstown Suns to a 3-1 win over the Rome Braves.

Jake Wald led off the 11th by drawing a walk off Sung Ki Jung (0-3) before Jernigan lined a shot over second baseman Willie James on a hit-and-run on a 2-2 pitch. The ball scooted between the outfielders and to the wall, allowing Wald to score easily.

Shortstop Luis Hernandez fired a relay throw past third baseman Wes Timmons, which allowed Jernigan to score from third with the insurance run.

Matt Palmer came on in the 11th to earn his fifth save - despite allowing a two-out single - to secure the win for reliever Josh Habel (1-2). Habel pitched three innings of two-hit relief behind starter Matt Cain, who allowed one run on three hits in seven innings.
