May 13, 2003

ROME, Ga. - The Hagerstown Suns opened an eight-game road trip with a 5-2 loss to the Rome Braves on Monday night.

The Suns (16-20) were held to four hits on the evening and failed to score until the eighth inning, when they were already down, 5-0.

Consecutive singles by Onil Joseph, Ardley Jansen and Jeff Francoeur off Suns starter Merkin Valdez (3-2, 2.47 ERA) gave Rome (22-14) a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Braves extended it to 3-0 in the fourth on Carlos Guzman's RBI triple and John Schuerholz's RBI single, and took a 5-0 lead in the seventh off reliever Ben Washburn on Brian McCann's two-run homer.
