May 10, 2003

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A 4-year-old boy found wandering barefoot around Waynesboro during a hazardous-spill incident on Center Square Wednesday afternoon was taken to the Waynesboro Police Station until his mother came looking for him more than an 90 minutes later, Borough Police Chief Ray Shultz said Thursday.

The mother was not charged, but police called Franklin County Children and Youth, Shultz said. Police were still investigating the incident, he said.

The mother's name was not released.

The boy was first seen at 3:52 p.m. by a fire police officer who was detouring traffic off Main Street onto Potomac Street while emergency crews worked on the hazardous material incident.

"He had no shoes, no socks and no shirt on," Shultz said. "He didn't know where he lived. He didn't seem to be upset and wasn't bothered by it."

Patrolman Charles Shoap put the boy in his cruiser and took him around the area, but he was not able to say where he lived, Shultz said.

Shoap took the boy to the station house, then went to see if he could locate someone who could identify the youngster. The officer knocked on homes and businesses along West Main Street to Cumberland Valley Avenue to no avail, Shultz said.

His mother came to the station at 5:15 p.m. looking for her child, Shultz said.
