Dull returning to Maryland in athletic department

May 09, 2003|by JOEL HUFFER

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Doug Dull is proof that who you know really does matter.

Dull, a 1981 graduate of the University of Maryland, on Thursday was named assistant athletics director for media relations at his alma mater.

He begins the job June 2, according to Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow.

Dull, 45, learned of the opening through Greg Creese, a current member of the Maryland staff with whom he worked on a national level during the 2002 college football season.

"Around the middle of January, he sent me an e-mail with the job description," Dull said Thursday by telephone from Manhattan, Kan. "I thought, 'Hey, it's my alma mater. Why not throw my hat in the ring?' Everything I heard about the athletic department from everyone I talked to was very positive."

Dull will leave Kansas State University, where as sports information director he has overseen a 16-sport Division I program since June 2000. Before that, he was assistant director of athletics for media relations at the University of California-Davis, a 25-sport Division II program.

"I'm thrilled to be coming back to Maryland," Dull said. "The opportunity to join an adminstrative team that is that successful ... it's just a great time to be a Terrapin with all they've got going for them right now."

Dull, a 1975 graduate of Smithsburg High School, was a sportswriter and editor at The Herald-Mail from 1982-89. He left to begin his career in sports information at California State-Chico.
