Warriors' defense starts in first round

Defending Class 1A baseball champion Boonsboro will start its title defense Friday in the West Region's first round.

Catoctin - the team the Warriors beat for the title last season - won't take the field until the South Region semifinals next Wednesday.

The state baseball and softball draws were released late Monday night by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

Boonsboro, a No. 7 seed, will open its defense at home Friday against No. 10-seed Beall.

Other first-round matchups in 1A West include No. 9 South Hagerstown traveling to No. 8 Northern Garrett and No. 6 Hancock hosting No. 11 Allegany.

No. 1-seed Clear Spring, No. 3-seed Williamsport and No. 5-seed Smithsburg all received byes to the quarterfinals. Clear Spring will play the winner of the South-Northern matchup, Williamsport gets the Allegany-Hancock winner and Smithsburg will travel to face No. 4 Westmar.


The Beall-Boonsboro winner will face No. 2 Southern Garrett in the quarterfinals.

In 1A South, No. 2-seed Brunswick will host No. 7-seed Poolesville in a quarterfinal, while the Cougars will have plenty of time to rest before facing the winner of No. 4-seed Forest Park and No. 5-seed Reginald Lewis in the semifinals.

In 2A West, Walkersville earned the top seed and will face the winner of No. 8-seed Century and No. 9-seed Francis Scott Key in the quarterfinals. North Hagerstown earned the No. 3 seed and will play the winner of No. 6-seed Middletown and No. 11-seed Centennial.

In 4A East, defending champion Thomas Johnson earned a bye to the quarterfinals as the No. 3 seed and will play the winner of No. 6-seed South River and No. 11-seed Meade.

Frederick is the No. 9-seed and will travel to No. 8-seed Broadneck for a first-round game.

* In softball, undefeated Catoctin - a state finalist last season - is the top seed in 1A South. The Cougars also get byes through to the semifinals, where they will play either No. 4-seed WEB-Dubois or No. 5-seed Reginald Lewis.

No. 2-seed Brunswick received a bye to the quarterfinals. The Railroaders will host No. 7-seed Forestville.

In 1A West, No. 9-seed Clear Spring travels to No. 8-seed Hancock for a first-round matchup pitting rivals.

No. 6-seed South Hagerstown hosts No. 11-seed Westmar and No. 7-seed Boonsboro hosts No. 10-seed Northern Garrett in other first round matchups.

No. 3-seed Smithsburg and No. 4-seed Williamsport both received byes to the quarterfinals. Smithsburg will face the South-Westmar winner, while Williamsport will host No. 5-seed Southern Garrett.

The Hancock-Clear Spring winner will face No. 1-seed Beall, while the Boonsboro-Northern winner faces No. 2-seed Allegany in other quarterfinal matchups.

In 2A West, Middletown earned the No. 2-seed and will play the winner of No. 7-seed Atholton and No. 10-seed Centennial in the quarterfinals. Walkersville also received a bye as the No. 4-seed and will host No. 5-seed Howard in the quarterfinals.

North Hagerstown drew the No. 6-seed and will host No. 11-seed Century in the first round.

In 4A East, both Frederick and Thomas Johnson will play in the first round. The Cadets are the No. 10-seed and will travel to No. 7-seed Meade, while the Patriots are the No. 11-seed and will hit the road to play No. 6-seed Westminster.

* All first round games for both baseball and softball are scheduled for Friday, with times to be announced. All quarterfinals are scheduled for next Monday, with semifinals next Wednesday and regional finals next Friday.
