Legends rally, hold off Suns

May 02, 2003

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Steven Checksfield hit two home runs and John Fagan added one as the Lexington Legends rallied from a 3-0 deficit Thursday night, then held off the Suns' ninth-inning rally for a 7-5 South Atlantic League victory.

Trailing 7-4, Hagerstown (11-15) made things interesting in its last at-bat. With one out, Derin McMains and Aaron Hornostaj singled. After a strikeout, Travis Ishikawa singled home McMains. Kevin Alexander walked to load the bases, but Carlos Sosa grounded out to end the game.

Sosa hit RBI doubles in both the second and fourth innings, the latter giving Hagerstown a 3-0 lead. But usually reliable starter Merkin Valdez (2-1), who came in with a 1.84 ERA, gave up back-to-back home runs to Checksfield and Fagan in the fourth and Pat Peavey's RBI double and Fagan's RBI single in the fifth as Lexington (11-17) took a 4-3 lead.

Ryan Kochen's two-run double off reliever Josh Habel in the sixth gave the Legends a 6-3 lead. Checksfield's second homer made it 7-4 in the seventh.
