Joseph A. Cook Sr.

Joseph Albert Cook Sr., 77, of 453 McDowell Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at his home.

Born March 2, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Margaret Shrader Cook.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Cook, in 1996.

He was co-owner of Hagerstown Automatic Controls Inc., retiring in 1983.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Roosevelt.

He is survived by his companion, Marie Bowers of Hagerstown; a daughter, Gloria Stottlemyers of Hagerstown; a son, Joseph A. Cook Jr. of Hagerstown; a sister, Quida Miller of Berryville, Va.; two brothers, James O. Cook of Charleston, S.C., and Robert E. Cook of Kentucky; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Fredrick and Mary Turner; a brother, William Cook; and a great-grandchild.


A memorial service will be held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Trisha A. Taylor

Trisha Ann Taylor, infant daughter of Heather Lynn Jordan and Jesse Scott Taylor of 17964 Garden Lane, Hagerstown, died at birth Friday, April 25, 2003, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Andrew S. Taylor at home; maternal grandmother Barbara Jordan of Williamsport; paternal grandparents Patricia and Gerald Taylor Jr. of Clear Spring; maternal great-grandparents Wava and James Barker of Williamsport; paternal great-grandparents Hildegard and Graham McNamee and Francis and Gerald Taylor Sr., all of Hagerstown; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Temple, 147 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Arrangements are by Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport.

Catherine L. Payne

SANDY HOOK - Catherine Louise Payne, 76, of Sandy Hook, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born April 12, 1927, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Gladys Childs Lewis.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Quentin E. Norris Sr., and her second husband, Charles W. Payne.

She was a member of St. John Episcopal Church in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary C. Reynolds of Sandy Hook; a son, Mike Norris of Brunswick, Md.; three sisters, Doris Mumaw of Bolivar, W.Va., Frances Longerbeam of Harpers Ferry and Barbara Brown of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; four brothers, Jack Lewis of Harpers Ferry, John Lewis of Emmitsburg, Md., Gary Lewis of Jefferson, Md., and Jimmy Lewis of Knoxville, Md.; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Quentin Norris Jr. and Francis Norris; a brother, Fred Lewis; and a grandson.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. Mary M. Garrott will officiate.

Bertha M. McVey

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Bertha Mae McVey, 84, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at her home.

Born June 13, 1918, in Anawalt, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Minter and Bessie Harris Blevins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard T. McVey.

She was a member of Leetown Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Dorthulia Wines of Hedgesville, W.Va., and May Carlisle and Wilma Rogers, both of Kearneysville, W.Va.; a son, Leonard O. McVey of Ijamsville, Md.; a sister, Opal Alley of Hopewell, Va.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and her close friend, Don Thompson.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary McVey; an infant son, Jerry McVey; four sisters, Rebecca Blevins, Maggie Blevins, Charlotte Blevins and Ruth Blevins; three brothers, Will Blevins, Ora Blevins and Les Blevins; and a grandson.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hazel G. Huntsberry

Hazel Genevieve Forcino Huntsberry, 90, formerly of 17920 Garden Lane, Hagerstown, who died Thursday, April 24, 2003, also was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Harp and Evelyn Spessard, and a brother, Vernon Nichols.

Helen Y. Beckley

FAIRPLAY - Helen Yvonne "Bonnie" Beckley, 58, of Fairplay, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.
