Volunteers clean up for Earth Day 2003

April 27, 2003

Volunteers from Williamsport gathered on Saturday to remove litter from streets and roadways, parks and along trails and waterways.

The activity was part of the Earth Day 2003 Community sMILE program, which this year replaced Allegheny Energy's Earth Day Tire Collection Project, according to a press release issued by Allegheny Energy Supply.

Participants helped collect approximately 30 bags of litter. The litter was taken to Allegheny Energy's R. Paul Smith Power Station to be hauled away to a permitted waste management facility.

"We are pleased that so many volunteers turned out for this worthwhile project and that we were able to help make our community a cleaner place to live and work," said Loye D. Hull Jr., regional director, R. Paul Smith/Hydro Region. "This type of project demonstrates what honoring Earth Day and showing community pride is all about."

In all, more than 200 volunteers collected more than 600 bags of litter during this year's event, which was held at sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
