Cash is seized in traffic stop

April 19, 2003

Maryland State Police seized $20,000 in cash Thursday night following a traffic stop on westbound Interstate 70 near Hagerstown, police said.

Trooper 1st Class Brian K. Smith pulled over a 2000 Ford Contour about 11:30 p.m. on I-70 past Md. 66 after he clocked the vehicle going 94 mph in a 65 mph zone, police said.

After the driver agreed to let the trooper search the car, Smith found $20,000 in bills underneath the armrest and in a rear cup holder, police said.

A Washington County Sheriff's K-9 unit gave a positive identification for drugs, which allowed police to seize the money, state police Detective Sgt. Mike Hegedus said Friday.

Because no drugs were found, the men were not arrested, Hegedus said. However, the money will be deposited into the state's general fund, and the men would have to sue to get it back.

The driver, whose name was not available Friday night, was cited for speeding, police said.
