A 44-year-old Washington County man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison and will be registered as a sex offender as a result of a party that went afoul last summer.

Mark Wayne Neilson, of 4406 Western Pike near Hancock, was charged with raping a 14-year-old girl on Aug. 31, 2002, after a party at his girlfriend's home, where he was living, according to charging documents.

Neilson also was accused in the documents of biting the girl and touching her breasts.

In February, a jury acquitted Neilson on the second-degree rape charge, but found him guilty of second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense.

Neilson initially was charged with first- and second-degree rape, third- and fourth-degree sex offense, and second-degree assault. But he was tried only on three charges.

Washington County Circuit Court Judge Donald E. Beachley sentenced Neilson to 10 years in prison on the second-degree assault charge, the maximum sentence for that crime.

Beachley did not add an additional sentence for the second charge, according to court documents. Neilson's name will be placed on the state registry of sex offenders.

Neilson filed an appeal of the sentence Tuesday, a court clerk said.
