AAUW book sale is coming

The Hagerstown Branch of the American Association of University Women book sale opens at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, May 1, and Friday, May 2; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3; and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4. The sale will be held at Washington County Agricultural and Education Center, Sharpsburg Pike, south of Hagerstown.

Saturday is half-price day, and Sunday, a grocery bag of books is $3. Paperback books are 50 cents each and hardback books start at $1.

Several books are available for bidding. They include "Locomotive Cylopedia of American Practice," edited by Roy V. Wright for the American Railway Association-Mechanical Division, published in 1927; Thomas Searight's "The Old Pike," 1971, an illustrated narrative of the National Pike, and other books. Sealed bids will be accepted throughout the first three days of the sale and will be opened at 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Some of the books in the special finds section are out-of-print and/or first editions. They include: "Highball, a Pageant of Trains" by Lucius Beebe, 1945; "The Maryland Germans, a History" by Dieter Cunz, 1948; "The Illiterate Digest" by Will Rogers, a 1924 first edition, and other books.

Proceeds from the sale benefit Washington County Library, AAUW's scholarship fund and other community activities.

Admission and parking are free.
