Head Start program awarded tax credits

April 14, 2003

Head Start of Washington County Inc. was recently awarded tax credits from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's Neighborhood Partnership Program for a $100,000 improvement project.

The Maryland tax credit program allows businesses to acquire tax credits, keep tax dollars in their community and support Head Start.

When a business makes a contribution of $500 or more through the tax credit program, it receives a 50 percent tax credit on the donation. In addition, it benefits from all state and federal tax deductions allowed for charitable contributions.

The program is open to all Maryland businesses.

Money raised through this program will be used to make much improvements to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center at 131 W. North Ave. in Hagerstown, which provides comprehensive child development and family services to 270 low-income, at-risk children age 5 and younger and their families.
