Mail Call for 4/10

April 11, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I thought spring was in the air. Could have fooled me."

"I have to agree with the person who called Mail Call concerning the last day of school being extended to June 11. Our family has changed vacation plans three times and now we stand to lose a deposit if we don't go. I just wish they would make up their minds."

"I am looking to find a starter recipe for the Friendship cake. Can anyone help me?"

"Spring has sprung and so has the 100 block of North Mulberry Street. There are enough kids out on the street to start four football teams, three basketball teams, two hockey teams and a bike racing team. If you are not careful coming down this street, I guarantee you, you will hit one of these up and coming star players. Maybe the city or the mayor can do something before one of these upcoming star players gets hit or killed."

"There are quite a few police-men that bring their children to Western Heights Middle School with their police cruisers using our taxpayers' money and then every time you turn around they want to raise taxes on us senior citizens to pay for this and that and the other."

"I am not sure what teachers and bus drivers thought when they decided to make group punishment. If one child does something, every child gets punished. I really don't think it's fair. In my days, you got sent to the principal, take the one causing the problem out of the room. Don't punish everyone. I don't think it's fair that all the kids have to pay. Take them out, single them out, don't punish everyone."

"I was calling to say that people may want to check the flags that they have on display, there are some out there that look really tough and torn and tattered. If it's ripped, it's time to replace it."

"I am a red-blooded all- American guy and I want to tell you, that if you didn't get to see Pamela Anderson on the Country Music Awards Monday night, you missed a beautiful sight. I thought she was great and I hope she hosts more shows because she is a very beautiful lady."

"I am calling because I read in the paper about that little boy who nursed that baby deer back to life. I don't know why Bush couldn't give him a permit to keep the deer. After all, he named it after him."

"In Tuesday's paper someone asked for the number for the Better Business Bureau. The number is 1-800-428-3419. Also the Attorney General's number is 301-791-4780."

"The Burger King on Sharpsburg Pike has a tree up inside with pictures of soldiers serving in the war. They also have yellow ribbons hanging inside, too. Please drop by to see them. It is just beautiful."

"I'm responding to the older couple that is not very well. They are in their 70s and 80s and the family doesn't come to see them. My mother is 85 years old and in perfect health, some minor problems, but not anything like the pain these two are having. We call my mother every day, if we don't, she will wonder why and call us. These two will get well if you go to visit them, throw your arms around them and say you love them. Don't you know one of the commandments is Honor your Father and Mother and another is 'Thou shall not kill,' you are slowly killing them, wise up! Ask God to forgive you first, then ask them to forgive you. They will be healthy once again. Your lack of love is killing them. Get together and have them a party. Show some respect for they raised you, but now you are done with them because they are old? Come on! You are going downhill. I am 56 years old and I'm planning on living to my 70s or 80s, are you that sure? If you can't love your family, then you can't love anyone but yourself. Enjoy living with them, while you can."

"Bin Laden was behind the 9/11 attacks and Saddam is behind the destruction of the oil fields. It is quite clear that this war is nothing but political strategy. I will be so glad when the next presidential election comes because Bush will be in the loser's bracket."

"Your newspaper is so much better. I have always loved The Daily Mail. But now it is a better quality of paper, the pages are smaller and now it is such a pleasure to read. It is so much easier to read and easier to handle. Thanks again for the very best."
