Suns, Valdez don't back down from Intimidators

April 10, 2003

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Hagerstown Suns gave their fingernails a chance to grow on Wednesday.

The Suns took a night off from sweating out a win by scoring four runs in the first inning - keyed by Jason Columbus' three-run double - before settling in behind a second dominating start by Merkin Valdez for a 6-0 victory over the Intimidators.

The game was the opener of a scheduled doubleheader and only lasted seven innings. The nightcap was rained out.

The Suns (3-2) got to Kannapolis starter Brian Miller quickly as Karl Jernigan led off with a single to center before Jake Wald and Aaron Hornostaj laid down bunt singles on the Fieldcrest Cannon infield to load the bases.

After Kevin Kelly ripped an RBI single to right, Columbus followed with his two-base hit down the left field line to stake Valdez to a four-run lead.

Valdez (1-0) shut down the Intimidators on one hit over five innings while striking out eight.

The Suns added runs in the third and fifth on hits by Carlos Sosa and Jernigan.
