Mail Call for 4/9

April 10, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I found an 1868, 2-cent penny. Is it worth anything?"

"This is for the protesters who don't like anything the government does, apparently. Not only in America, but the rest of the world, too. If you don't like what America does, what are you saying about Saddam and the other countries, do you like what they do? Or, are you just people who complain about everything? You probably are."

"My name is David, I am calling in regards to John Munson. Where in the world does he get his ideas on doing away with kindergarten and pre-k? These are informative years for our children in Washington County. Does he want them to roam the streets and become potential drug dealers by the time they get into elementary and high school? I think John Munson should be kicked out of office and stripped of his $10,000 pay increase that he promised to give back. I also think he should be held accountable for his statements. The County Commissioners need to wake up and listen to what John Munson is saying because he is not a political leader."

"I read Bob Maginnis' editorial. He was saying about the registration fee on the landlords, which is $45 and they are going to raise the taxes on 1.5 percent and then I see in Mail Call where a lady wants to know why rent is so high in Hagerstown. Because the landlords now are going to pay 4.5 percent property tax. This is why rent is so high. So ask your County Commissioners and your mayor why rents are so high."

"The ladies in the Maryland Symphony Orchestra Office express their undying gratitude to the gentleman of the South Potomac Street Fire Company for coming to their rescue last Thursday morning."

"For the person who requested information on Baltimore County for their daughter's school report. Go to the travel center on the top of South Mountain on Interstate 70 and ask for a Maryland Travel Guide. It has information on every county in the entire state. If that doesn't do any good, call Boonsboro Middle School and ask for Chris and I would be glad to share any information with you."

"Charley Reese seems to know everything about the world's problems. Maybe he should run for president and if elected, he and his administration could solve them."

"This is for the person looking for attractions in Baltimore County. The National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, where 'The Star Bangled Banner' was written, and Babe Ruth's boyhood home. That is just to name a few."

"To the people in Hagers-town. Do you ever wonder why they spent so much money on the brick that they put in the roads downtown last year and now they are coming up already? Why are they spending all this money when they could be using it to pay their own bills, so we don't have to pay outrageous prices on our mortgages? Does anyone out there agree with me?"

"For the person who was asking for attractions in Baltimore County for their daughter's report. Please leave your number in Mail Call or contact the Cockeysville Library in Baltimore County at 1-410-887-1919."

"I would like to give a belated thanks to a snow angel. He works for Steffey and Findlay Oil Company. He brought my neighbor oil when she was out completely on the day of the blizzard and I offered him cookies and a Coke and he refused to take it. But I would just like to say thank you very much for being so kind."

"To the curbside summer and fall cleanup. Last year wasn't our fault, so now we have to pay to have it picked up. The ones that don't have that kind of junk to sit out, why do we have to pay for their mistakes? What should be done is, the ones that have all the junk should have to pay. Come on now, use your brains."

"To the person who asked for the hearing impaired things at the movie theaters in Hagers-town. I work at the RC Valley Mall Theatre. The last Sunday and Monday of each month, for two days there is about four shows a day."

"I wonder how many people realize that the Maryland General Assembly just recently passed a bill to allow illegal aliens to get discounts on college tuition in Maryland. Now illegal aliens will get the same discounted tuition rate as a legal, in-county, in-state resident. Isn't that a crock?"

"In response to the lady looking for attractions in Baltimore County for her daughter's report. You have the Baltimore Zoo, Inner Harbor and the Aquarium are some things that your daughter could do on her report."
