Mail Call for 4/7

April 08, 2003

"If deputy schools superintendent Patricia Abernathy did not have the authority to make the decision on the end of school year date, why did she have the TV, newspaper and radio announce it? By making the school day one-half hour longer, schools were supposed to close June 6. If she didn't know to go to the state for final decision, then she may be in the wrong job. I am sure that I am not the only one that feels this way. If you are a concerned parent, please write to Mail Call with your opinion. Let's not jerk our children around. Times like these are confusing enough."

"The person in Mail Call said what is with this newspaper. I can tell you what's with this paper. The paper is going to the dogs. They have changed the size, they changed the delivery."

"I am responding to the Mail Call about the person who was looking for an inexpensive way to spay a cat. If you would call Cumberland Valley Vet at 301-739-3121, they will work with you and I will pick up the bill. It's just a donation to them. They are aware of this."

"I just read in the paper where they are going to raise property tax, they are going to double the parking meters, water and sewer. I would like for the councilmen to explain where it is going. I just hear they created 1,100 jobs in the area, all the building going on. If you don't have the money, don't spend it. Tax and spend. We have to live within our means, we can't go to the boss every time something goes up and ask for a raise. We have to live within our means, why can't they?"

"Can someone explain to me why the people in Washington County would want to go downtown and park and pay when you can go to Wal-Mart and Valley Mall and don't have to pay. There are more stores to choose there.?"

"I can't believe that I am reading on the front of the paper that school is now being extended through June 11. They are going to add three days and those three days are half days, where they get out 2 1/2 hours early anyway. It's a waste of time and taxpayers' money. They said that the state sent the plan back that the county submitted to them because they wanted them to focus on making up school days rather than making up hours of instruction. What is more important, that your children go a set 180 days of schools or if they are just getting enough instructional time. It's ridiculous because nothing is accomplished on a half day anyhow. They said it would be June 6, they added a half hour on each day. We have already rearranged our schedules to deal with that, so why are they backtracking now?"

"So the city wants to raise parking fees, well that's fine, go ahead. From now on I will do my shopping at Valley Mall."

"The We Care Neighborhood Watch Group will meet Tuesday, April 8. The officers meeting will be 6 p.m. and the regular membership meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., at the VFW at the corner of N. Locust St. and E. Washington Street."
