Portorreal whiffs 10 Bats batters

April 07, 2003

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Daniel Portorreal allowed three hits and struck out 10 in six innings as the Hagerstown Suns shut out the Greensboro Bats 2-0 Friday for their first win of the 2003 South Atlantic League season.

Carlos Sosa went 2-for-4 for and scored what proved to be the winning run for the Suns (1-1).

In the top of the fifth, Sosa singled and stole second before scoring on a single by Brian Munhall.

Portorreal (1-0) and relievers Jason Waddell and Matt Palmer made that run stand up.

Waddell pitched two innings and Palmer pitched the ninth without allowing another hit to get the save for Hagerstown.

Hagerstown pitchers retired 24 of the last 26 batters they faced. They did not issue a base on balls in the game.

Paul Mildren (0-1) took the loss for Greensboro, allowing one run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Suns added an insurance run in the eighth off Greensboro reliever Manny Esquivia. Jake Wald singled, moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Kevin Kelly groundout to second base.

Mildren and Esquivia combined to strike out 12 Suns on the night, while Casey Blalock worked a scoreless ninth for the Bats.
