Gloria E. Grove


FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Gloria E. Strang Grove, 63, of 11191 Loop Road, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at her home.

Born Jan. 27, 1940, in Hamiltonban Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James E. and Mae Wagaman Strang.

Her husband, Daniel C. Grove Sr., died May 6, 1997. They were married April 10, 1961.

She was a 1958 graduate of Fairfield High School.

She was employed in the dietary department of Samuel Dixon State Hospital, now South Mountain (Pa.) Restoration Center; and as a machine operator at Stanley Co., Chambersburg, Pa., until 1976.

She was a member of South Mountain Bible Church.

She was a member of Adams County Fish and Game Association.

She is survived by one daughter, Kandi S. Bible of Hagerstown; three sons, Jeffrey L. Grove, Daniel E. Grove Jr. and Timothy A. Grove, all of South Mountain; one sister, Kathleen Kauffman of South Mountain; one brother, Harry Strang of South Mountain; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Steven R. Grove; one sister, Claudine Bakner; and seven brothers, Edgar Strang, Kenneth Strang, Hubert Strang, Denton Strang, Joseph Strang, Hairm Strang and Eugene Strang.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. David L. Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




George W. Cookus II


CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - George W. Cookus II, 34, of Charles Town, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at his home.

Born Oct. 9, 1968, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of George W. and Patricia Ashby Cookus of Martinsburg.

He was employed by Quad Graphics.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Suprina R. Cookus and Earline Ashby, both of Martinsburg; and his fiancee, Janie Burgin.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Jack Ruby will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter S. Barrett


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Walter Saunders Barrett, 96, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at City Hospital.

He was born March 6, 1907, in Stamford, Conn.

His wife, Frances Barrett, died in 1993.

He was a graduate of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y.

He was an electrical engineer.

He was a 32nd-degree Mason.

He was of the Episcopal faith.

He was a ham radio operator and a member of Opequon Radio Club.

He is survived by one stepdaughter, Robbie Kuntzweiler of Martinsburg; one daughter, Carolyn S. Stetler of Clinton Corners, N.Y.; one sister, Viola Kearney of Southbury, Conn.; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held at the family's convenience in Stamford.

Memorial donations may be made to Martinsburg-Berkeley County Library, 101 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25401; or to Meals on Wheels, 116 E. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Sally C. Bell


RIPPON, W.Va. - Sally Carroll Bell, 84, of Rippon, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Grottoes, Va.

Born April 22, 1918, in Kabletown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arch and Nellie Wasson Carroll.

Her husband, George L. Bell, died April 10, 1987.

She was a member of Grottoes Church of God.

She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Jones of Charles Town, W.Va., Elfreda Slack of Glengary, W.Va., Evelyn Whittington of Martinsburg, W.Va., Georgiana Robinson of Winchester, Va., and Mary Wampler of Grottoes; one sister, Eleanor Hummer of Charles Town; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Louise Murray; three sisters; and five brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. Pastor Delmas Gordon will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Stephen E. Deitz


Stephen Edward Deitz, 52, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Born July 2, 1950, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Hildegard A. Heyse Saylor of Hagerstown, and the late Robert C. Saylor.

He was a 1968 graduate of North Hagerstown High School. He attended Hagerstown Junior College and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

He worked at LaFinestra Restaurant in Boca Raton, Fla.; ASHP in Washington, D.C.; and Red Horse in Frederick. Md.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Frances M. Hardy of Hagerstown; one niece; and a good friend, Georgia Middlekauff.

Services and burial will be private.
