Raymond G. Happel Jr.


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Raymond G. Happel Jr., 78, of 1900 E. Main St., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at his home.

Born Oct. 8, 1924, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Raymond G. Happel Sr. and Edith E. Hotchkiss Happel.

He was a graduate of Woodward High School in Washington, D.C.

He owned and operated Wayne Heights Auto Sales for 10 years, retiring in 1982. Earlier, he worked with his father in the contracting business and for Frick Co. in Waynesboro where he became foreman in the welding shop.

He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II in the Central Pacific. He received three Bronze Stars from participation in the Marshall Island operations, the Marianas Islands operation and the capture and occupation of two Iwo Jima islands.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro.

He was a member of William Max Mclaughlin VFW Post 495 of Waynesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Lou Snyder Happel, whom he married Jan. 3, 1998; a son, Gary R. Happel of Waynesboro; three stepdaughters, Kathy Schultz and Karen Corwell, both of Chambersburg, Pa., and Diane Reed of Orrstown, Pa.; three stepsons, Harold F. Armstrong Jr. of Greencastle, Pa., Douglas Armstrong of Newburg, Pa., and Darren Armstrong of Chambersburg; two sisters, Carolyn I. Farr of Clearwater, Fla., and Elaine Decker of Cascade; three grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private. Burial will be in Antietam Cemetery, formerly Price's Cemetery, in Waynesboro, with military graveside honors by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Veda C. Coupe


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Veda C. Knight Coupe, 98, of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at the nursing home.

Born May 14, 1904, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Frances Izer Knight.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Coupe, in 1991. They were married Oct. 12, 1948.

She attended Chambersburg schools.

She owned and operated the former Sequoia Pines Hotel in Caledonia, Pa.

She was accomplished in the arts and crafts.

She is survived by a sister, Ruth Watson of Chambersburg; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews, including her primary caregivers, Christine S. Hospodar and Cindy S. Hospodar, both of Chambersburg.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Knight and Isabel Knight, and three brothers, Ernest Knight, Charles Knight and Garnet Knight.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Memorial Fund, 201 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Robert C. Sheeley


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert C. "Bob" Sheeley, 76, of Waynesboro, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1926, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Carl Q. and Margaret I. Gardenhour Sheeley.

He was a 1944 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

He retired from Waynesboro Design Services in 1994. Earlier, he worked for Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing in Hagerstown as a draftsman and for Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro in the engineering department.

He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1944 to June 1946 aboard the Troop Carrier U.S.S. General R.M. Blatchford.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Waynesboro where he attended Wilson Sunday School class, formerly served on the administrative board, was an usher and had served as Sunday school secretary.

He was a member of National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, E. Lorraine Frank Sheeley, whom he married August 21, 1948; a daughter, Victoria A. Dapp of York, Pa.; a granddaughter, Nicole L. Dapp of York; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, William L. Sheeley Jr. and David L. Sheeley.

Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Jay E. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen E. Grimes


FREDERICK, Md. - Helen E. Grimes, 91, of Frederick, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick.

Born Oct. 21, 1911, in Myersville, Md., she was the daughter of the late John Emmert and Arlepha V. Dusing Shepley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe M. Grimes Sr., in 2000.

She was a graduate of Middletown High School and Frederick City Hospital Nursing School.

She was a member of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church.
