Holmes leads Cougars by firing a no-hitter

SOCASTEE, S.C. - Backed by an exceptional defense, Jawaan Holmes fired a no-hitter to lead Jefferson to a 4-0 win over Conway (S.C.) Wednesday at the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.

Holmes (2-0) struck out one and walked three as he sent Conway (8-1) to its first loss of the season.

Justin Dailey went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Cougars (5-1). David Pugh, Brian Peterson and Steve Kozak each had two hits.

Spartanburg 6, Hedgesville 0


MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Matt Trail held Hedgesville to one hit in a dominating performance for Spartanburg (S.C.) at the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.

Trail struck out four and got help from a couple defensive gems.

Dirk Webb's sixth-inning double was the only hit for the Eagles (0-3), who play Upper St. Clair (Pa.) today at 1 p.m.

Mount Olive 13, Sheperd 6


MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Shepherd College's Jason Walck and Josh Delawder each went 3-for-5, but it still wasn't enough offense as Mount Olive (23-14) defeated the Rams.

Delawder had a pair of doubles and Joe Crook and Bo Royal added two hits apiece for Shepherd (5-9).

Smithsburg hosts volleyball clinic


Smithsburg High School will hold a volleyball clinic for middle school players on April 12 from 8:30 a.m.-noon in the school gym.

Money raised from the clinic will be used to purchase new volleyball equipment.

Cardinals name coach


The Cumberland Valley Cardinals semipro football team announced they have hired Phil Petry to be their head coach.

Petry, a South Hagerstown graduate, begins his reign as Cardinals coach on Saturday when the team holds open tryouts on Saturday at Trojan Stadium in Chambersburg, Pa.

The coaches will meet at 10 a.m. before a players' meeting at noon. Tryouts begin at 1 p.m.
